Mezcaleria Oaxaca!

Hopefully if you don't have facebook you can still see this photo album...

I had the honor of painting the floor of a new mexican restaurant opening up on the top of Queen Anne. More photos in a few weeks after they get the furniture in!

I AM the Magic Magpie

All Photographs by Casbah Photography - Medfest 2011

Finally! Another post!

I know I've been remiss with this blog. Oh woe! But this is a great location for me to post up some new photos I had taken today!

Finally! Photos!

And here we are! Photos of my mostly put together shop at 6410 Latona Ave NE!

Functional! Working towards elegence. MINE!!!

My floor cloth! Big thanks to Aunt Sandra for giving me the idea. It's my first one!

Also, the "comfy" chair, where the bellies and feet will be hennaed, is on loan. Still looking for another just like it!

The "Hand Station" That little table needs a lamp and something cute on it. And a little sign saying "hand station." :) The back of the cabinets still needs to be covered (wallpaper, probably)

The art is "temporary". I really want to make a big piece for the orange wall, flanked by two smaller "rotating" ones. Also, the butts of those chairs are getting PAINTED! :)

There you have it! A month and a half of hard work, but it's now just little tweeks here and there (like the curtain rods and curtains, the lamp for the table, a sign for the window, and so on.)

Wow, this is turning into a nightmare crazy week/weekend. I have a bunch of pictures of the shop and how it's turning out, including the floor cloth I've been working on. Tomorrow I'm doing a 10 hour photo shoot, so I'll have a lot of photos from that, but in the meantime, I'm just run ragged and need to rest! I went and visited my mother because Zara and her boyfriend were in town, but as soon as I got there I found out the hair/makeup artists for tomorrow's project got in a car accident so I spent 7 hours calling anyone and everyone I could, but finally booked the second girl at 9pm, so hopefully we're golden. I should have a shot of whiskey or something to knock me out so I can actually sleep, I'm so high-strung and excited. Whew.

Lots and lots of progress on the shop, photos someday soon, I promise. I was planning on doing it today but then I spent 7 hours straight working in the shop, after a 6 hour work day so I think I need to go to bed. :)

More of the shop

The handles are on my door, including my "door bell" !

Here's my dad changing the deadbolt on Krys's side. He was very helpful!

The mess of painting is done. Just a little bit of touchup left on the trim where dribbles happened, but the walls are finished!

You can just see on the ceiling here the new lighting my dad installed yesterday. SO much nicer then the last set. I have to paint the ceiling around the new fixture, but that can be a project after I move in.

colors

Not quite right, but a good idea. I think the beige on the bottom there is a bit dark in the photo, but at least you get an idea of all three colors.

The Shop!

So here's the shop without the previous owner's window decals (only one bit left, the blue lotus, but I think I'm going to take it off too.) Those decals took me 3 hours to remove. Sheesh!

The floor on Krys's side was *3 inches* lower in the corner. Self leveling concrete to the rescue! (You can see the blue color of Krys's walls in this photo too.) Also, note the fact that we PULLED the linoleum up to do this. That's because the linoleum wasn't glued down at all. Although they put a piece of doublestick tape just in front of the door...that'll do, right? Sigh.

This is after the first coat of my orange paint (thus the blotchy appearance). I haven't gotten a photo since the second coat because it's been so dark by the time I close up for the night. The white shelves you see in this photo will be a "wall" in both our rooms.

The shop is right in front of a bus stop...actually right in front of the butts of the busses. The glass on the left hasn't been scraped yet, but just washed. The one on the right...well...I think I'm going to have to set up a schedule to clean these puppies. Aaaaand probably get an air purifier of some sort.

Update on the shop

No photo today, but thought I'd post a quick update on how the shop's coming.

So far, we've been focusing on the shell. Plugging up nail holes, fixing one of the doors so it actually hangs on it's frame right (and opens/closes), pealing decals off the windows (took 3 hours!), fixing and cleaning the louvered windows above the doors, washing the walls and taping the floor edges. Tomorrow we'll start primer-ing. Actually, I started a bit of priming today using a magnetic paint. Several coats in a rectangle over where my desk is going to sit, so I can pop my magnets up there to dry after I've worked on them.

Krys and I have been juggling our schedules. Betts (Krys's mom) has had a cold so she's been pretty low key (but SO helpful!)

Talk about a baby shower!

This is the bower where the expectant mother sat and was given her gifts and blessings at the baby shower I did henna at tonight. The mother set it up, and when I told her it was so beautiful and I was going to tell my mother to do the same for me, she said "You come here. I do for you."

I was much appreciated. My designs were slick, and everyone was impressed...there was the tinyest bit of "how did the white chick get this gig" but once I started going, everyone started complimenting. Good food, too.

I've got a shop!

There's 91 of those photos from today's shoot. I think I'm just going to cave in and set up a "pro" flickr account. (They only let you load up so many a month without the pro status). Then I can link to them. This blog only lets you post 5 at a time (you can add more, but really, it's kinda janky.)

Snow on Ferns

I actually can't decide if I like this version better

or this one.

Difference is only in the saturation and contrast controls. I thought originally I'd like the photo better in a more monochromatic color, giving it a "hibernation" feel, but then when I bumped up the greens I thought I like the contrast and the idea of "survival despite the cold".
